To 2020

I will fight for this year. I will not let
This murky mayhem make me forget
That this is the year of perfect vision:
This is the year of bold decision.

By fighting I mean digging my fingernails
Into all that is good in these travails;
By perfect vision I mean learning to see
Without sight, beyond sight, beyond me.

By deciding I mean laying out the facts,
And the fears, and then from all possible acts
Choosing the ones that laugh at the lightning,
Bow to the silence, face all that’s frightening.

At the end of the day, I will do the things
They will write songs about—the daring flings,
The hidden heroics, the patchwork moments
That make up history. I will make dents
In the armor of despair that declares we can’t cope.
In my smallness this year, I will fight for hope.

Absolutely love this… ❤️❤️ This is so perfect. Remember how at the beginning of the year we had all those sermons and speeches about “20/20 vision”? First sermon of the year my pastor preached on change… being willing to adapt and so on and so forth. I think he was meaning to prepare us (the congregation) for a few small changes (like a coffee bar, painting the sanctuary, etc.). I don’t think he was anticipating something as radical as this- the virus, and now the riots. But I love this because it’s hopeful. Let’s not lose this year, despite everything happening. Thank you for this beautifully written reminder.

    1. Thank you so much for your thoughts and kind words! You’re so right, it’s funny to look back at the beginning of the year, how we were so optimistic that this would be a great year and talking about “2020 vision” and stuff. It definitely has not looked like we thought, but I don’t want that to make us give up on this year. God’s going to do good, if hard, things in it. Thanks again for commenting! ❤
