The night before I leave. Thinking of home and goodbyes and family and the things that have held me steady all these years.

When I wake up,
I hear the chatter of the fairy friends in the room next door;
The clang of the collar of the dog at the base of the stairs, eager for company;
The scuff of socks on carpet and the happy hello of the house as it creaks beneath our feet;
A faucet turned on, a door opened and shut, a low murmur, a cough—
And as much as I love my solitude
And can sit in silence, serene,
The noises of the ones I love
Are the soundtrack of my life.
