Advent, Pt. 3 | Coming

Advent, Pt. 1 | Waiting

Advent, Pt. 2 | Saying Yes

Advent is all about coming––Jesus coming, and our waiting and preparing for him. But of course Advent is only one part of a bigger story, and I love the idea that while during Advent we wait and even beg for Jesus to come, the other half of the story is that he now calls us to come. He came to us so we could come to him.

Come, come
Do you hear the drum
Beat of our hearts, the thrum
Of our feet, the hum
As our voices meet, hailing from
These distant lands,
But the same uplifted hands:

Please, please
Do you see our knees
Fold in despair, we freeze
In the cold, the tease
Of this hope we hold, our disease
Of fear and hate—
Will it win? Is this our fate?

Come, let us seek the Lord and beg for mercy.
Come, listen to our years of desperate cries.
Come, you promised Emmanuel.
Come.

Come, let us reason together; though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.
Come, listen to me and eat what is good; let your soul delight itself in abundance.
Come, you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Come.

Come, come
I extend an invitation
To every child of every nation,
Of every kind, of every station,
Come and taste of my salvation.
When you fell down, I raised you up.
When you drank the dregs, I filled your cup.

Please, please
End this weary march of yours.
Over your filth my mercy pours.
I’ve set you free, step through the doors;
Let my love direct your course.
Do you see now my promises are true?
I have come, your God with you.

Come, let us adore him.
