{Fireside Fridays} My Vacation Crew

Hello hello! It’s so good to be back! I might be posting about South Africa in the future, but the summary of the trip is that it went really well. I’m just astounded by God’s goodness and all that He did for me on it. Thank you all so much for your prayers. You’re the best and I missed you all.

I wasn’t sure how I’d get back into blogging, but I saw this link up and knew I had to join in: Schuyler’s 10 Fictional People I Would Take on Vacation. It’s pretty self-explanatory. Doesn’t it sound like tons of fun? Let’s see who’d be in my crew.

{ the cook }

I’m kind of blanking on this one. Unfortunately Ma Ingalls is a real person or I’d pick her. Let’s go with anybody from Redwall because the descriptions of their feasts make my mouth water or a hobbit because those people (or, well, hobbits) know how to eat.

And as a side note, that’s something I’d like to see more, both in modern fiction and in fantasy: food. Very few authors ever mention it or describe it, but it would make books so much richer and more realistic if they did.

{ the storyteller }

Earnin, Chief Poet of Rudiobus and Knight of the Farthestshore. Anne Elisabeth Stengl has created one of my favorite characters of all time with him, and not only would I love to hear the stories he has to tell (at least, all the ones not involving Lady Gleamdren), he’d also be a jolly lot of fun to have around.

Bard Eanrin

{ the musician }

Leeli Wingfeather, hands down. She sings and plays the whistle harp, which I really want to hear. Besides, she’s just so sweet. I’d definitely want her presence on my vacation.

{ the adventurer }

Does Lord Peter Whimsey of Dorothy Sayers fame count for this? He’s not an adventurer in the fantasy fight-dragons-and-save-kingdoms sense of the word, but he certainly loves to take risks and get himself involved in dangerous situations. I can guarantee that if he came, our trip would end up being more than a mere vacation.

none of the actors who play are anything like I imagine him, so. and there’s no fan art for his mysteries, sadly.

{ the comedian }

Wit. (A.k.a. Hoid.) I mean, come on. He cracks me up all the time in Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive, and he’s got other useful skillz (definitely skillz with a z for him) that could help me out. Plus, he can do all the insulting that my INFJ-ness won’t allow.

Oh, toughie. This is cliche, but I can’t leave out Gandalf. He’s incredibly wise, I love his good heart beneath his gruff exterior, and he can fight quite well too. But I’d also love to take along Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird. He’s uncompromising about his beliefs but still empathetic and respectful. I could learn a lot from him. I’m going to have to take both, but you can’t judge me for wanting a lot of good counsel, right?

Gandalf-2

and I don’t like the actor for Atticus, either. use your imaginations.

{ the defender }

This one feels a little unfair. I mean, think of how many amazing defenders are out there. But there’s one that immediately comes to mind and stands out from the rest: Aragorn. He’s everything you could ask for from a defender—loyal, dedicated, strong, courageous, noble, full of integrity (random question: what’s the adjectival form of integrity? is there one? there should be.).

Aragorn
does this just not scream defender?

{ the medical help }

Angela from Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance Cycle is the obvious choice. She’s hilarious and quirky and knowledgeable about all manner of things, including healing. I’d love to hang out with her, and I’d feel very safe with her care.

{ the mechanic }

Definitely someone from K. M. Weiland’s Storming (which I read on my trip, by the way, and loved). I’ll go with Jael because not only can she fix stuff well but she seems like an amazing person I’d love to get to know.

{ the pastor }

Hmmm. I’m picking Father Tim from Jan Karon’s Mitford series, because he’s both wise and down-to-earth (plus endearingly awkward at times). I’d love to chat with him about theology and books and life in all its messy beauty.

So: a talking animal or hobbit, a Faerie cat-man, a crippled princess, a gentleman detective, a Cosmere-travelling enigma, a wizard and a lawyer, a Ranger King, an herbalist, a woman raised in a flying ship, and a Southern Episcopal priest. Quite the variety, but  that’s what makes this so fun. Can you imagine a vacation with all these folks? I’d kind of like to write a story with them all interacting.

Well, that was fun! I urge you all to join Schuyler’s link up (link at the top)! Until then, chat with me: What do you think of my choices? Which of them would you want to hang out with most? How do you think my vacation would go?

    I hope your vacation takes place near mine so our teams could meet up and pull all-nighter parties or something because that would be fun. Especially with your cooks.

    1. YES. This must happen. And good gracious, the cooks. *cackles* We can sit in the corner and people (creature?) watch and plot stories.

  2. This sounds like quite the group . . . I’m rather amused, trying to imagine how all these people would interact.

    1. Haha, I know. I really wish they could come to life and this could actually happen. I’d just sit in a corner and watch them all interacting.

  3. Jael would be a GREAT mechanic to have along for a trip. I love the list you made, and the illustrations accompanying each character were so fun.

    And I agree. Good literature needs a lot more good food!

    Love your list so much. Thanks for joining in. 😀
