The Text Tag

I’ve seen this fun tag floating about, and when Abi posted her answers to it a few days ago, I decided to snag it. As a typography-lover and logophile, I just couldn’t pass it up. (Words make me happy, guys. They’re beautiful).

Okay, here are the rules:

1. Thank the person who nominated you and link back to them
2. Answer the original 6 text-themed questions
3. Add a typography/word related question of your own, for those that you tagged to answer
4. Tag 6+ bloggers and notify that you tagged them
5. Include these rules in your post

Let’s jump right in! *readies nerdiness*

1. What is your favorite letter of the alphabet?

Oh no. Let me type them out so I can figure this out:

a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z

(That moment when your mind blanks halfway through typing that, and you suddenly doubt everything you’ve ever known about the alphabet. Does w really come after v??)

I like g because it’s fun to write in both printing and cursive, lowercase and capitalized. Plus, you’ve got both the hard and soft sounds of it. So yes, g it is.

2. What are three words you love?

I’m always saying, “Oh, I love that word,” but now when I actually have to list some of those, I’m stuck. Okay, here are the first few that come to mind:

jubilee // pluviophile // irked

If you’re wondering about “irked,” I love how perfectly it fits what it means. Just say it—it sounds like what you feel when you’re irked. We simply don’t use it enough anymore. I’m on a campaign to bring it back into everyday usage.

(Also “bookkeeper” because it has three pairs of double letters in a row. Thank you Encyclopedia Brown for teaching me that. Or “sanguine” because it comes from the Latin word for blood but means optimistic in its  adjective form. I find that quite interesting.)

3. What are three words you hate?

This I find to be a rather odd question. I mean, I hate swear words and inappropriate language, but I doubt that’s what this means. I feel a little bad saying I hate any word. Ah, but I actually can think of some:

parentheses // rural // grub

The first because I have a chronic inability to spell it (I just keep adding eseseses until spell-check corrects me); the second because I can’t say it (how much of the second r are you supposed to pronounce?); the third because it sounds as gross as the thing it means.

4. If you could create a word, what would it be, and what would it describe?

Oooh.

aestedium n. [from aestas, Latin “summer” and tedium, Latin “boredom”] the frustration of feeling bored in the summer when you feel like you should be all excited that you have nothing to do

Example: Abby wandered through the house bemoaning her aestedium.

5. What are your three favorite punctuation marks?

The semicolon gets a bad rap these days, but I really love it. It’s sophisticated and useful and pretty. Same deal with the squiggly bracket things (do they have an official name?). And who can forget the ampersand (that’s another word I absolutely love)?

; {} &

6. What are your three favorite fonts?

Yesyes I love fonts. Avenir is great for a simplistic, modern, stylish look, Hoefler has a nice classy feel and is perfect for bigger blocks of writing, and Lobster’s just plain fun, cute, and purty.

Abi’s question: What time of day are you most productive in writing?

Funnily enough, evening. Usually I’m far more productive in the morning—morning bird here—but with writing, I do much better at night. Maybe it’s because I’m too tired to be perfectionistic, so I just let myself spit out anything and don’t worry about whether it’s “good.” Who knows.

Now for my nominations! As always, this is completely voluntary, and if I don’t tag you but you think this looks like fun, go for it! Just make sure to link back to me. =)

Victoria // Lalaithiel // Savannah // Sara Letourneau

Okay, so that’s only four. *sheepish smile* Just grab it if you want to, guys.

And my question: What are your least favorite letters and why?

Let’s talk words! Even if you aren’t doing the full tag, what are your answers to some of these questions?

  5. Oh my goodness, this is such a fabulous tag (it may be my favorite of the ones I’ve seen). I love all of your answers––aestedium has got to be a word now. And it’s amusing since I never even thought of “rural” being difficult to pronounce. I keep muttering it under my breath right now and it sounds weird to not sound out the second “r” any less than the first. Now I’ll have it stuck in my head all day. xD Thanks so much for the tag. =D

    1. I’m glad you like it so much. I love it too. =D Haha, that’s funny. I guess it’s just me, but I’ve always felt like if you say the second “r” just like the first, it’s too, idk, forceful, but it you say it too little, it becomes a jumbled mush, like “ruhhhal.” The in-between is tricky. XD Anyway, you’re quite welcome!
