NaPoWriMo 2016 // Days 16-22

Week 1 // Week 2

Happy Monday, lovely readers! How was your week? I apologize about the absence of Fireside Fridays—my arms have been hurting again, so I’ve decided to cut back on typing. Fortunately, school’s almost done for me, freeing up my typing time for stuff like blogging. I was also still able to write my daily poem (okay, some days it was only a haiku, but that still counts), so I’m really grateful for that.

I noticed that I tend to prefer writing first drafts with no punctuation—it distracts me and breaks up my flow of thought, so I just ignore it. However, I decided this week to go back and add in what punctuation I thought appropriate afterwards. I did this mostly because I want lack of punctuation to be unique, to really mean something, and to truly fit with the poem’s style and topic, not just to be there because I didn’t feel like dealing with it in the first draft.

One more thing: Let me know if you can think of a better title for Day 22. I’m rather stuck on that one.

that moment when

5/19/16

that moment when someone speaks right when your favorite part of a song comes on

you’re sitting there, quivering with anticipation of depth and truth and beauty when

a harsh voice shatters the air with some inanity, some vacuous, meaningless triviality

that moment when you realize their small talk matters as much as your deep thoughts

because they matter just as much as you

Remember Those Days?

5/20/16

Remember those days?

When we played all day in the park,

Soft grass beneath bare feet,

Finding firefly friends when it grew dark?

Remember those days?

When we stared in awe at those ahead,

Sure we wouldn’t make their mistakes,

Wondering with excitement where our paths led?

Remember those days?

When we spoke up bravely to anyone,

Didn’t care what people thought,

Danced in the rain, twirled ‘neath the sun?

Remember those days?

Remember how long they seemed,

Like we’d never get to be big,

Never arrive at the future we dreamed?

I didn’t realize then that those were the days of dreams.

Can you show me how to keep on dreaming, even now?

Futility

5/21/16

like water escaping clenched fists

(no matter how tight you grasp,

the seas always slip through)

like birds chasing wild winds

(no matter how fast you run,

you’re left in the dust, dirt-bound)

like the elusive wind itself

(no matter how you strain your eyes,

its capricious whisper evades sight)

like lilies gracing the ground

(no matter how hard you work,

they’ll wither in the morrow’s sun)—

we’ll never have this moment again

~

breathe

cherish

let it

perish

breathe

embrace

let go

the days

breathe

exhale

the past

grows pale

and another second dawns

repeat

we’ll never have this moment again

Dusk

5/22/16

Gray-white twilight

Wraps around the peonies,

Nestles under petals

As delicate shadows;

They shine with a breath of moon.

Birdsong wafts in on

Muted, mild strings,

A dirge—a heralding—

Of the day—of the dark—

Gilding their voices is the moon.

I cannot see it yet

But who needs to see to believe?

Why am I biting my fingers,

Like tearing apart will bring healing?

My soul unfolds before the moon.

Sun still reigns,

The end of an age.

How fast this empire falls!

So the stars think

When they observe our striving

From their seats beside the moon.

One shade dimmer,

One day dying,

Wind winding through windows,

No respect for day or night.

It dances despite sun and moon.

But I with my eyes,

I care about light,

Light and dark, wrong and right.

The peonies emanate serenity,

And together we wait for the moon.

  5. “Why am I biting my fingers, / Like tearing apart will bring healing? / My soul unfolds before the moon.” These are all so gorgeous. ❤ "that moment when" is incredibly relatable (and convicting), and I love love "Futility." They're all beautiful.
