Tag Times Two

I haven’t done a tag post in forever, so let’s remedy that with two of them today! I’m hoping to do a third one (want to know what I’d do with a million dollars?) soon as well, but I didn’t want to overwhelm you guys with three tags in one post. 😉

Before I start, however, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who’s tagged me for things. It makes my heart happy when I see my name at the bottom of someone’s tag/award post. Even though I don’t always get around to doing them myself, a sincere thank you for the nominations.

{Describe Me Challenge}

The lovely Lalaithiel tagged me; thanks so much, dear! (Check out her amazing NaPoWriMo poetry, guys.) The rules are:

Thank the blogger that nominated you (cha-ching)
Choose one song that describes your music taste
Choose one outfit that describes your fashion taste
Choose one meal (including a drink) that describes your taste for food
Choose one book that describes you / changed your life
Choose one quote that describes what you want for your life
Tag five people

{song}

This is probably the toughest out of all these, because my music tastes are so eclectic. I’m going with Sound of Silence by Celtic Thunder because the music makes me so happy, and the words are representative of what kind of lyrics I like: thought-provoking.

{outfit}

I’m really born in the wrong era because I love dresses and cloaks and fancy stuff. But since I’m here in the twenty-first century, I primarily wear flared jeans and cute sweatshirts or sweaters or t-shirts. As for shoes, I like Vans, flats, and flip-flops (totally the best part about summer).

{meal}

Food. Oh, food. Sometimes it’s just a pain, sometimes I love it. Crepes, though. Nutella crepes. Those could totally be a meal. With milk, I guess?

Raspberry-Nutella-Crepes-1-sm
with raspberries?! Life can’t get much better.

{book}

Oh my goodness. So many come to mind. But one that describes me is totally Miss Rumphius. It’s a kid’s book that really did change my life, because it inspired me to be like Miss Rumphius, who had three goals in life: to travel to faraway places, live in a cottage by the sea, and do something to make the world more beautiful.

So me.

Many thanks to Abi at The Left-Handed Typist (is that not an amazing blog name?) for tagging me! I loved her questions and couldn’t wait to answer them. Here’s how this one works:

1. Thank the blogger who tagged you.
2. Tell us 11 facts about yourself.
3. Answer the 11 questions given to you.
4. Tag 11 bloggers (hahaha, you know that’s not happening) and give them 11 new questions to answer.
{the facts}
  1. I named my new iPad Lilac. (Yes, I name inanimate objects. It makes life so much more interesting and wonderful.)
  2. I teach swim lessons. It’s mostly fun (and I get paid, so that’s always nice), but it’s also draining for introverted me. And the water is way too cold for basically standing still for an hour with four-year-olds.
  3. I like fonts and typography.
  4. Which means I like this joke:“Wow, you always have so many fonts, where do you get them from?”
    “Oh they come from Monaco, Geneva, Chicago, New York… I get them delivered at various Times throughout the day…”
    “By who?”
    “A Courier!” (found in the depths of the internet somewhere)
  5. Numbers, letters, days, and months have colors and genders for me. For instance, three is yellow and a girl.
  6. TV shows I like are Robin Hood (BBC), Sherlock (BBC), Foyle’s War, and The Flash.
  7. I am Team Cap.
  8. I haven’t read Harry Potter, but according to quizzes and research I’d be in Ravenclaw.
  9. I feel like I used the fact above in another tag. Oh, well.
  10. I’ve been taking Latin for about eight years now, and I absolutely love it.
  11. Three things on my bucketlist-that-needs-to-be-updated are: 1) see an aurora; 2) learn sign language; 3) work in an orphangage.

{the questions}

1. What is your favorite month of the year?
My favorite season is autumn, but I’m actually going to go with December as my favorite single month because I love the cozy, meaningful Christmas festivities. It’s such a magical thirty days.
2. When buying a book cheap, do you prefer an e-book or a used paperback?
 It really depends on how much I want the book. If I just want to breeze through it once, ebook. If I’m going to go back to it several times (or it’s something snooty-sounding that I want to display arrogantly on my bookshelf), paperback.
3. If you could smell one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Oh my. I have so many favorite smells, but I think they’d quickly lose their pleasantness if that’s all I could smell. I’m going with the air after a rainshower, because it’s so fresh and not too powerful.
4. Have you ever read a Shakespeare play (in old English)? If so, which one(s)?
Yes indeed! Macbeth, Julius Caesar, King Richard II, and The Tempest. My favorites are the first two.
5. What are your birthday traditions?
I personally don’t like huge parties with tons of people for my birthday; I prefer smaller, more meaningful activities. It varies from year to year, but I always have a little family party where I open my gifts, eat a dinner I picked, and have some sweets. *shrugs* I guess it sounds boring, but that’s really all I do.
6. Do you prefer to write by hand or type things up?
It really depends. Writing by hand helps when I’m brainstorming, world-building, journaling, or need to get my creative juices flowing. It also tends to work better for poetry, although sometimes I need the quickness of typing for poems. I prefer typing for short stories and novels.
7. What is your favorite style of house (cabin, modern, Victorian, beach, etc)?
Huh. I like how Victorians look on the outside, but I think I’d want something spacier and more open on the inside. A many-windowed beach cottage would work. Ooh, or some mountain cabin.
8. Wide rule or college rule paper?
College rule, all the way.
9. What is your least favorite chore?
Anything smelly, I guess? I don’t really mind chores. I’m not a huge fan of vacuuming, because vacuums scare me (don’t laugh), and I don’t like cleaning toilets. Anything else is fair game.
10. How long have you had your blog and what is one tip you would share?
I’ve had it for a year and a half now (wow). As for tips … Two problems I’ve noticed among beginner blogs are poor grammar and too many emoticons, exclamation points, caps, etc. Everyone has a different style—some people are more casual and conversational, and so use those sorts of things more—but too many of those make you look immature. As for the grammar, please. Everyone makes typos, but really try your best to use correct grammar and spelling.
Also, I’d emphasize replying to comments (hehehe, not my strongest point. I’m truly working on it, guys.) and following and commenting on other blogs. The community in the blosophere is so important and edifying, and if you make the effort to communicate with others, you’ll reap the rewards.
11. If you could visit one fictional world, which would it be?
Halp. How can I pick one? But actually, now that I think about it, this is pretty easy: Middle-earth. I love the varied topography—mountains, forests, plains—and there’s so much to explore. It’s a magical place but not too foreign to what I’m used to.
{my questions}
  1. What’s your favorite way to communicate with friends if you can’t be together in person (phone, Skype, email, snail mail, etc.)?
  2. What is something that surprised you about blogging?
  3. What is your least favorite time of day and why?
  4. Who are some historical heroes of yours?
  5. What’s a song that describes your life right now?
  6. What YouTube channels do you follow (if any)?
  7. What are three things on your bucket list? If you don’t have one, what are three random dreams or goals of yours?
  8. How do you act when you’re extremely happy about something?
  9. What do you want people around you to do when you’re really upset about something?
  10. What is one pro and one con of your place in the family (oldest child, youngest, middle, only)?
  11. What is one thing you want your future self to remember?

(I actually like these questions. Yay.)

{nominations & celebrations}

I feel like I tag the same people over and over again, and I lose track of who has already been tagged. So: if either of these looks interesting, grab it and link back to me!

I also want to do something a little different and fun: In the comments, anyone can answer some or all of my questions at the end. I’d really love to see your answers and chat with you about them.

Oh! And one more thing: This is my 200th post! *cue cheering and confetti* I probably should have done something special for it, but we can celebrate anyway. Thank you all for reading, commenting, liking, for encouraging and challenging me, for giving me the motivation to keep blogging. I honestly wouldn’t do it without you. Best readers ever. I mean it.

  1. Thanks so much for doing this! Your facts and answers were superb and your questions excellent. Your birthday traditions don’t sound boring; they sound like mine! And yes, I was born in the wrong fashion era, too. I would have loved everything from the 1880s-1960s. And I have hair that totally thinks we’re still in the 80s. I kid you not. It’s just a kinky fluffball. I’m a Ravenclaw, too 😀 And yes to all those TV shows. Now I gotta answer your questions because they are epic. And I’m so glad you like mine!

    1. Texting for the most casual sort that I just want to know I’m still alive and here, and snail mail for those I really want to keep up with, tell my darkest secrets, and learn theirs. 🙂
    2. I had no idea it was so fun! They may sound silly, but I always thought I’d hate it until I gave it a shot. Because I’m not typically a very strong conversational/small talk person. I was also taken back by how long it took!
    3. Late afternoon. Like 3-5. Because it’s the hottest time of the day and I’ve usually about finished school and my to-do list (that or I’m ready to take a nap about now). I just want it to cool off and be supper time.
    4. Priscilla Mullins and Amelia Earhart.
    5. “Everything At Once” by Lenka.
    6. I like to look up the Piano Guys or lyrics to songs I don’t have, but I don’t follow any channels.
    7. (1) Go to the Netherlands, (2) become an author, (3) live in Virginia.
    8. I move faster, smile more, and don’t focus on anything very well when I’m very happy. I basically just bounce in place until it’s time for whatever I’m excited about 😛
    9. Give me space. That can be me curling up in bed with a book or going to get frozen yogurt or something (without the entire family).
    10. I’m the oldest. So the pro is that I’m at the top of the food chain. The con is that as soon as I’m able to do something, so is everyone else. Right down to the 2 year old.
    11. How much I enjoyed eating what I did (despite the results) and how much better I feel after reading the Bible (because I forget sometimes.)

    These questions. So good! Thanks again for doing this! 😀

    1. Thank *you* for tagging me! I’m glad I’m not alone about birthdays or fashion eras. And your description of your hair was quite amusing. (;
      I quite agree about snail mail—there’s something more personal and intimate about it. I’m glad you decided to start blogging even though you thought you’d dislike it. Nice bucket list items, too! The Netherlands is an amazing place, so I hope you do get there someday. I’m sure #2 will happen. As for #3, I’ve lived there for a while and wasn’t particularly enchanted with it, but that’s mostly because I lived in a trafficky area. =P I’m the oldest, too, so I totally get what you’re saying.
      Thanks so much for answering!

  2. Hi, I got really excited when I saw the thing about numbers and letters because…well, did you know that has a name!? It’s called Grapheme-Color Synesthesia, and it occurs because while the neurons were developing in early childhood, some of them did not separate entirely (or something like that–I’m a little rusty). I started being really fascinated with all branches of Synesthesia a few years ago when I learned that seeing colors of sounds is called Chromesthesia, and my fascination has not abated. Anyway, if you have time it’s really fun to research [and to give characters, for an unusual “quirk”].

    1. This comment made me so happy, because I have heard of synesthesia! I hadn’t known the specific name (Grapheme-Color), though, so thanks for telling me so I could look it up. It really is fascinating, and you’re so right about using it for characters—what a great idea! Thanks for commenting!

  3. Your birthdays sound like mine. As does your fashion sense. *hi5 for people born in the wrong fashion-century*
    A few question-answers, since I’ve done the tag before but your questions are awesome:
    -What is something that surprised you about blogging?
    How difficult it can be to keep to a schedule if you don’t have some kind of weekly feature.
    -What do you want people around you to do when you’re really upset about something?
    Depends what I’m upset about . . . a lot of times, I want someone to ask if I’m ok and what’s wrong and can they help because I want that reassurance that someone cares and someone’s going to help. But some times, I just want everyone to leave me alone so I can sulk and read a book and forget my problems before I snap someone’s head off. >.<
    -What is one pro and one con of your place in the family (oldest child, youngest, middle, only)?
    I'm the oldest of two. A pro of that is that I don't have a bunch of smaller people running around to annoy me and take up my parents' attention and mess with my stuff. A con is that I don't really have a clue what to do with other people's small children, since I didn't have younger siblings to practice on. (Though, I think that the pros outweigh the cons, personally . . .)

    1. Yay, I’m glad I’m not alone for either of those two. *high-fives back*
      That is so true about blogging, and I’m quite similar about what I want others to do when I’m upset. I usually need to cool off by myself for a bit, and then I’m ready to accept others’ concern and help. Mmm, that’s very interesting. I’m the oldest, but of five, and I definitely have smaller people running around. There are many pros to that, including what you said about knowing how to handle little kids, but there are also many times that I’m jealous of people like you. ;D

  4. Wow, I love those quotes, especially the Bonhoeffer one. That kind of courage is incredibly inspiring. Your questions are great! I think I may just grab the second tag, since I’ve never done one before XD.

    Ahhh, so much loveliness I don’t know where to begin. First of all, I love that you chose “Sound of Silence” as the song — it’s just so beautiful and intricate and true. “Take my words that I might teach you, Take my arms that I might reach you.” And crepes. ❤ There's a small cafe here in the city that we went to once that had crepes. When you visit we'll have to go there. ;D Also it's been a while since I read Miss Rumphius, but I remember it was a beautiful book. Wonderful choice. The quotes too — the first one, and the burning one, especially. Just burn, for whatever it is, burn for goodness. I need that reminder daily.
    That font joke is hilarious. XD And yay for Sherlock and Robin Hood and Team Cap. And I'm pretty sure I'd be Ravenclaw too — us awesome INFJs. ;D Also yay for other people who have boring birthdays. xD I don't recall ever doing something super amazing for my birthday. Also fantastic blogging tips. There's nothing that turns me away more than three million exclamation points and tons of emotes. And replying to comments. Like, how can people even think that it's socially acceptable not to reply to comments, and not even like them? It just don't make sense.
    Questions! I'll answer a couple of them here. =D
    -What is something that surprised you about blogging?
    I think how many people follow and read my stuff. XD And also how by reading so many other blogs I get a wider view of people's opinions.
    -What is your least favorite time of day and why?
    Probably one o'clock. It's a really awkward in-between time for me, and I don't like it. xD
    -What do you want people around you to do when you’re really upset about something?
    Depends on what type of upset it is. xD Normally I'd rather be left alone, even with my family members because I don't think they understand how to help me when I'm upset. xD But sometimes I need to talk it out, so I would like people just to listen and give me suggestions.
    I think this comment is long enough already, so I'll stop here. xD

    1. *grins* I adore long comments (although, as you can see, I’m rather bad at replying to them promptly. xD). You were the person who introduced me to that song, so thank you ever so much. ❤ Oh, wow, we must. And I'll take you to get a real French or German one when you come. =D Oh my, we're so similar. xD I love it. Yay to all of those things indeed. And come to think of it, Ravenclaw seems like very Ni-ish, so I'm not surprised.
      I do really like that about blogging, getting a broader perspective of the world because of other's people opinions. Mhm, I totally agree about when I'm upset.
