On Freedom

“I know why the caged bird sings,”

she says,

“of things unknown but longed for still —

of freedom.”

and I agree that this is true

for some

but that other caged birds sing for freedom

already found

for cannot freedom be found in the form

of chains?

could not the truest freedom come from

behind bars?

maybe manacles liberate like an open door

never can

so, yes, the caged bird sings

of freedom,

the freedom it could not find until it became a

caged bird

Note: Quotations from Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”.

  1. Interesting poem. 🙂 I think there’s only one specific time this works out well XD (aka Christ)

    1. Definitely in Christ. And sometimes I wonder if it works out in other ways too — like perhaps if you don’t get an opportunity you wanted and are stuck in “normal” life. That can feel like a cage, but I think there’s freedom in finally accepting whatever plan God has for your life at the moment. I guess wherever God is, you can find freedom.

      1. Well when I say it, I mean that we shouldn’t let people or governments keep us in cages and have them pretend it’s for our own good. Also Jesus doesn’t really put us in cages, we always have the freedom to sin. Maybe that’s why I like Jesus more than people and governments.

        1. Ah, I see what you mean. I’m definitely not advocating that you just let people treat you however they want or that you shouldn’t fight against evil or unjust prisons. And no, Jesus doesn’t put us in cages. Sometimes they seem like cages to us, but they really aren’t, which I guess was the point of this poem. Haha, yes, He’s far better than any of that. Thanks for your thoughts!
